Today I am introducing a new video segment ‘Ingredients To Ditch’ to help you clean out your beauty cabinet and ditch the toxins.
The very first ingredient we are going to look at today are Sulfates. The one that is of particular concern is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which you may have heard of before. This one has been in the media a fair bit because of the damage it does to the skin.
Sulfates are particularly bad because they strip the acid mantle of the skin, which is the protective barrier of oil that sits over our skin and stops things such as chemicals, germs and bacteria from entering into our body through the skin.
Because sulfates leave us exposed to chemicals, germs and bacteria it can result in our skin becoming sensitive and irritated. In The Healthy Skin Diet Karen Fischer noted that the damage from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) causes can be seen under a microscope up to 4 weeks after use and 9 days by the naked eye. Isn’t that scary?
If you suffer from Eczema, Psoriasis, Dermatitis, Acne or other skin conditions this may just be the ingredient you need to ditch to help clear your skin condition up once and for all. I give you an example of how this has helped a client of mine in the video.
So it’s time now to go through your beauty cabinet, have a look at all of the products that foam or where water and oil needs to emulsify together and have a look to see if it contains any sulfates.
I encourage you to look up your ingredients at www.ewg.org/skindeep and see if they are safe to use on your skin.
Use these products up that contain the sulfates (or maybe you will want to ditch them asap if you suffer from a skin condition) and then commit to buying a cleaner, healthier alternative next time.
